Being productive in your day-to-day life is important for achieving something important in your life.
Even if you don’t have some big goals to achieve in your life, you still need to be productive and manage your time well for day-to-day activities like cooking, cleaning the dishes, doing laundry and many more.
No matter what you need to get done in the day, you need to be productive with your time and energy you spend on things. So finding ways to be more productive is always desirable to know.
Of course, there are a number of ways to do that. Some of them might work for you and some might not. I try to test these out on my own to see if it works for me.
Below given are 5 ways that made me more productive in my life.
Make Smaller to-do lists
When you sit down and write a to do list for the day, it consists of a lot of things that you need to finish or complete at the end of the day.
When you look at all these tasks, you get overwhelmed, demotivated and maybe discouraged to do anything(happens to me a lot).
So instead, you can remove the tasks that don’t need to be done right away. Which you can afford to do sometime later.
There may also be some tasks that you personally don’t have to do and can delegate it to someone else either by paying them or asking for some help or favour.
I realise this is not something that happens often if at all but just to know it exists helps.
Try making a smaller to-do list for a day and see how it works out for you.
Focus on the Most Important tasks
While we make smaller to-do lists, the best way to do that is to pick out 1-3 tasks that are the most important.
These tasks must also be something that has a major impact in your day be it your work or anything else you are working on and is important to you.
Focus on completing these tasks first in your day. If you have extra time on your hands after completing these tasks, you can work on any other tasks of your choice.
But the idea is that at the end of the day when you go to sleep you have the satisfaction of knowing that you completed the big tasks.
Always have the top tasks on your to-do list be the most important tasks for the day.
Make Fewer Decisions
There is something called Decision Fatigue which is caused by making too many decisions in a day.
Do you know how many decisions you take in a single day for small activities like what products to buy, what to wear, what to cook and various other things ?
You may not realize it but you spend a lot of your energy and time in this when it can be better spent on other non-trivial decisions.
Make fewer decisions in a day by automating it if it’s possible or do it all in advance.
For example, last week I made a small schedule by picking out the clothes I would wear for every single day in the upcoming week.
I did this on a Sunday evening so when the time comes for me to get dressed for the rest of the week I don’t have to stress out about what to wear because I already picked them out.
Even though it’s a small activity compared to other big decisions I can better use that energy on something else important than on clothes.
Make an attempt to write a meal plan for the upcoming week and notice how relaxed you will be when it’s time to cook on those days.
Stay away from Decision Fatigue by making fewer decisions.
Multitasking saves time.
Is that why we do it?
It may be true in a way but most probably what happens is that if you keep switching between tasks to complete, you don’t focus enough on the task you are currently doing and maybe end up making mistakes.
Which in the long run takes even more time to correct everything and finish it.
And in doing so you use more time and energy which have been eliminated if you didn’t multitask in the first place.
Did you know that changing your tasks more than 10 times a day decreases your IQ by 10 points ?
Focus on one task at a time in order to be more efficient and effective in your work.
Less is more when it comes to being productive and finishing up stuff to do.
So avoid multitasking even if it seems more appealing to do so.
You know that you are not being 100% productive with completing more tasks in your day.
That is probably why you are reading this right now. But instead of just finding ways to be more productive it might be better if you identify the root cause.
Why are not being productive enough?
Is it because you lack the energy to do more work?
Is it because you spent too much time watching Youtube videos(because Lord knows I do)?
Is it because you multitask ? Or is it because you simply have so much to do?
Whatever the reason might be, only you can find out by analysing your day, what you spend your time on, where do you spend it, what are your distractions.
After finding the problem, start to work on the solutions.
Be strategic with how you spend the time in your day and what you spend it on.
To conclude, here are the 5 ways to be more productive: make smaller to-do lists, focus on the most important tasks, don’t multitask, make fewer decisions, and be strategic.
I hope this article gave you some ideas on ways you can be more productive.
